Objective: Patrick will calmly participate in conversation for 5 minutes when his foster mother calls on Monday evenings.
Assessment: Patrick is scared to hold the telephone. When his foster mother calls him on Monday evenings Patrick will listen to her conversation via the speaker phone. He is usually pacing around the dining area, so it is very difficult for her to hear any of his communication. Patrick is usually unsettled for approximately 30 minutes after the phone call and requires ono-on-one time with a worker to returm to a relaxed state. While Patrick is developing his telephone skills, his Mum, Helen will make a very short call to him in the mornings and in the evenings.
Task Analysis:
Phone rings
Staff member picks up the telephone and says Hello, Sally speaking.
Caller says Hello Sally, it's Helen (identifies themself), and asks to speak to Patrick.
Staff says "Hi Helen, sure I will get him to come to the phone"
Staff goes to locate Patrick and tells him that his Mum is on the phone.
Staff prompts by asking Patrick to come to the dining area to talk to her.
Staff waits for Patrick to move towards the telephone.
Staff go with Patrick to the Telephone.
Staff prompt Patrick to sit down near the telephone then sit next to him.
Staff offer the telephone handset to Patrick to hold
if Patrick refuses to take the telephone handset, staff can choose hold the handset to Patricks ear.
If Patrick gets up and starts to sway and pace, staff can set the handset to speakerphone.
Staff informs Helen that the phone is now on speaker and Patrick has started to pace.
Patrick begins to repeat some of Helens words.
Staff repeat the words so that Helen can hear them because Patrick is too far from the phone.
The two previous steps are repeated over and over until Patrick leaves the area.
Staff inform Helen that he has left.
Helen expresses her thanks.
Staff thank her for her call.
Helen hangs up the telephone.
Staff go to help Patrick settle towards a relaxed state.
Entry skills: knowledge of how the telephone works, reinforce this with a social story.
Motivators and blocks to learning: Patrick wants to have contact with his foster mother but he is scared to hold the telephone.

Instructional statement: Patrick, your Mum is on the phone, she would like you to come and have a chat with her.
Prompts and consequences: Your Mum likes to hear you talking to her, she feels happy when she hears your voice.
Your Mum wanted to hear your voice tonight, she will call back tomorrow and she hopes you will be able to talk then.
Sequence: Patrick will receive the reward three consecutive times before he is expected to move to the next step to receive the reward.
Step 1) Patrick sits down to take a telephone call.
Step 2) Patrick will stay seated with the telephone switched to speakerphone he says one word to his Mum.
Step 3) Patrick will stay seated while the telephone is switched to speakerphone he says "Hi" and one word to his Mum.
Step 4) Patrick will stay seated while the telephone is switched to speakerphone, he says "Hi" and one other word and "Bye" to his Mum.
Step 5) Patrick holds the telephone to his ear and he says one word to his Mum.
Step 6) Patrick holds the telephone to his ear and he says "Hi" and one word to his Mum.
Step 7) Patrick holds the telephone to his ear and he says "Hi" and "Bye" and one other word to his Mum.
Step 8) Patrick holds the telephone to his ear for one minute and he says "Hi" and "Bye" and one other word to his Mum.
Step 9) Patrick holds the telephone to his ear for three minutes and he says "Hi" and "Bye" and one other word to his Mum.
Step 10) Patrick holds the telephone to his ear for five minutes and he says "Hi" and "Bye" and one other word to his Mum.
Materials: A telephone with speakerphone ability. Prefer one that can have the Richmond theme song instead of the standard ring tones. DVD of Patrick's mum showing her talking on the phone.
Reward: Take Patrick to his recliner chair and read a Social Story to him, while he thumbs his magazines, about a Mum and a young man who talk on the telephone and how happy it makes them feel.
Setting: Home at Holley St. seated at the 2 chairs near the telephone in the dining area.
Time: Show Patrick the DVD in the afternoons, his Mum will try to call him in the mornings and evenings, this will be dependent on her treatment.
Record and evaluate: A recording form is attached. Evaluation is scheduled after 10 days of recording.
Modify: Active support is key in this program, staff feedback is welcome and modification will be based on suggestions.
Opportunities for Generalisation: Skills learned in this program would also be used with a mobile phone, ipod, transistor radio, calling emergency services.
Risk Assessment: The risk is likely that such frequent telephone calls could make Patrick more stressed and exaggerate the incidence of behaviours of concern. Overall it is worth pursuing the task as the outcome will lessen Patrick's behaviours of concern. The predicted outcome is to reduce stress in the long term.
Skill Development Plan: Patrick could benefit from the use of social stories that teach him that phones are not going to hurt him.
